It didn’t take long for St. Augustine cornerback Jhamal Shelby to make a name for himself on the gridiron. On Tuesday morning, the 2022 prospect received an offer from Florida State University.
“I was extremely excited to receive that offer. It’s something I’ve been working on my whole life. It was to the point that I was so happy about it that I didn’t know how to express how I was feeling in that moment.”
Florida State running backs coach Dave Johnson — who doubles as the Seminoles’ recruiting coordinator and who typically recruits Louisiana heavily— is trying to establish a pipeline from the New Orleans area and more specifically the high school he was once the head coach of. Shelby’s teammate Byron Turner is currently committed to the Seminoles’ 2021 class.
“When Coach Dave (Johnson) offered me, he was basically telling me that he’s looking forward to me coming up for a visit to the school once the NCAA allows on-campus visits to resume. He also told me that he likes what he’s seeing in my game and that he will be looking for me to keep improving.”
If you haven’t heard Shelby’s name thrown around in recruiting conversations, that’s because before today, it hasn’t been. Before this season, he was relatively unknown on the football field and the recruiting circuit. Shelby is a 2-sport athlete. Going into his junior year, baseball was his primary focus.
That all changed this past weekend, where he had a terrific outing against two of Louisiana’s best wide receivers— Edna Karr’s Destyn Hill and Aaron Anderson. In that game, Shelby didn’t allow a single catch while in coverage and also had 2 pass deflections that turned into interceptions.
“I see myself improving more as the season goes on. I’ve been training before and after practice and working on my craft to advance my skills to a higher lever and then applying it on the field on game days.”
For the immediate future, Shelby just wants to focus on helping his team reach their first LHSAA State Championship Game since 1979.
