MANDEVILLE--There is officially a pipeline from Mandeville High to McNeese State University.

With Cody Orgeron set to begin his final year as the starting quarterback for the Cowboys in the spring of 2021, McNeese State head coach Frank Wilson went out and secured the services of another quarterback for the 2021 recruiting class in another Mandeville native.

Skippers senior quarterback Devon Tott is a 6-3, 185-pound gunslinger who made it official, committing to the Cowboys Thursday night.

“I truly believe that McNeese State is the best option for me right now,” Tott said. “Coach Frank can help me grow as a player on the field and off the field as a person. McNeese State is absolutely the best opportunity for me right now.

“Coach Frank is from Louisiana and just knows how things go. He’s from the New Orleans area and is a great person. Add to that the fact that the school is close enough to home but still far away enough. I’m excited to stay in state as well as be part of a high octane offense like we run here at Mandeville.”

Hoping to replace Orgeron once he arrives on campus this summer, Tott said the former Mandeville High quarterback played a big role in his committing to the Cowboys.

“Cody and I were actually tossing the ball on the field (in Lake Charles) a few days before I got the official scholarship offer. (Orgeron) talked me up a lot with the McNeese coaching staff, which I appreciated.”

Through two games this season Tott is off to a phenomenally hot start, completing 10 of 14 passes for 319 yards and six touchdowns in a win over Archbishop Hannan and completing 16 of 26 passes for 212 yards and three more touchdowns in a win over Northshore.

“In my opinion I think McNeese State is getting an absolute stud in Devon Tott,” Mandeville coach Hutch Gonzales said. “I think they are getting an absolute steal. There was a lot of mid-major interest in (Tott) and rightfully so. He’s going to grow into that frame that he has. He’s only going to get bigger and stronger. He can make all the throws.

“When you watch him spin the ball at practice you see that this kid makes college level throws on a daily basis. The ceiling for him is very high, especially at that level. He’s walking into a situation where he can possibly compete for a starting job. He is really going to have a chance to play.”
