Connor Simon has known where he wanted to play college baseball since he was a young boy.
Now, the St. Paul’s senior gets to live the dream of nearly every Louisiana boy who plays the national pastime, as he has signed a baseball scholarship with Louisiana State University.
“When you commit it doesn’t really mean anything,” Simon said. “It’s just your word and the school’s. When you commit to a school, the school still wants you to perform like they know you are capable of doing out on the field. Live up to the expectations until the time comes when you really sign. I knew I had to live up to LSU’s expectations of me since my commitment and now with Signing Day here I know that I did my job. I lived up to their expectations and all the hard work paid off.
“I knew I was capable of doing it. I was never nervous; I guess aware is the better word when it comes to things.”
An infielder who also has seen time on the mound for the Wolves, Simon has a .303 career batting average with 47 runs driven in, helping St. Paul’s capture the 2019 Division I State Baseball Championships.
Those statistics are expected to improve drastically in 2021 as Simon saw half of his sophomore season lost to an injury and nearly all of his junior season lost to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I grew up loving LSU,” Simon said. “My entire family is huge fans of LSU. I grew up loving LSU athletics. When I started getting into wanting to play college baseball, I was already an LSU baseball fan and they are the premier program in the country. I mean, the writing is pretty much on the wall.”
Simon is projected to play shortstop once he arrives on campus.
“I committed as a shortstop,” he said. “But I may get there and the entire infield is filled up and they say can you play the outfield or we like you at third base. I’m down for playing wherever is needed. I just want to play.”
